AI Security’s Biggest Mistake: Treating the Agent Like the User

Many enterprises still assume an AI agent is safe as long as it only accesses what the user can access.
That assumption is starting to break down.
In agentic environments, the real risk is not only what data the AI can open. It is what the AI can infer, combine, and act on across systems at machine speed. Harmless fragments in isolation can become highly sensitive once the agent connects them in context.
That is where traditional permission models, DLP rules, and static filters become insufficient.
“Same access as the user” is not a strong enough security model.
Think about how we work as humans.
When you go to HR for a contract amendment, the HR officer does not get an automated summary of your entire email history or private Teams chats just to update a document. They get the context needed for that specific job, and nothing more.
AI agents should work the same way. Not as supercharged assistants with broad inherited access, but as Digital Employees:
➡️ with a defined purpose
➡️ with explicitly bounded authority
➡️ with access limited to what is needed for that job
➡️ with traceable actions and accountable ownership
The safer path is not a more powerful assistant. It is a purpose-bound digital employee operating within clear guardrails.
If you do not define the AI’s role, scope, and authority, you are not governing it. You are only hoping its access pattern stays benign.
